Should I use hydrogen peroxide, formic acid, and selective strippable system (SSS) for paint removal?
Hydrogen peroxide is the most common as it is the safest to work with that provides good material removal capabilities. Formic acid is the most aggressive and fastest stripper but most dangerous to the aluminum. The selective strippable system (SSS), or intermediate, paint remover is used for stripping over composites and is designed to stop working when it reaches the composite primer.
What are the requirements for handling hydrogen peroxide waste?
All waste must be placed in plastic drums or metal drums with a thick plastic liner. Hydrogen peroxide has a violent reaction to steel in metal drums.
How do I apply the product to the aircraft exterior?
Spray application using either an airless or HVLP system, HVLP is recommended. Alternatively, apply by a brush and scrub.
What type of spray equipment do you recommend?
For hydrogen peroxide-based products all spray equipment should be stainless steel; do not use brass fitting or nozzles as the peroxide will corrode them. Brass or stainless steel equipment works with formic acid and SSS systems.
Can I use the same spray equipment to apply the stripper and the paint, if it is cleaned and flushed?
No.
Can I mix products if it has the same base?
No.
How much product should I apply to the aircraft exterior?
A: Apply just enough for uniform coverage that has a velvety appearance. Overapplication will cause the material to run off the surface. As a guideline, you should use about 1m2 per liter (40 sq. ft per US gallon).
